1 - El Elyon

Scripture Passages: Genesis 14, Luke 1:26-38

Devotional

Today, in our first time together, we are going to reflect on one of God’s names found in Genesis 14: El Elyon, which means “God Most High.” This name reminds us of His supreme power, control, and sovereignty over all creation.

In Genesis 14, Abram experiences a remarkable victory. With just 318 trained men, he defeats a group of kings to rescue his nephew Lot and recover stolen goods and captives. On his return, Abram encounters two kings: Melchizedek, the king of Salem, and the king of Sodom.

Melchizedek, described as both a king and priest, meets Abram with bread, wine, and a blessing. He calls God El Elyon, the “Possessor of heaven and earth.” This revelation shifts Abram’s perspective. He realizes that the victory wasn’t about his strength or strategy—it was about God Most High, who owns and controls everything.

Then comes a contrasting encounter. The king of Sodom offers Abram riches as a reward for his efforts.

But Abram, with his newfound understanding of El Elyon, refuses. He boldly declares,

Genesis 14:22-23

I have raised my hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, 23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is yours, lest you should say, I have made Abram rich:

Abram’s trust was fully in God the Most High —not in earthly wealth, people, or circumstances.

So, what does this mean for us today? It means we serve a God who is above all. He owns everything. He rules over every situation. Whether we face battles, decisions, or temptations, we can rest knowing God Most High has it all under control.

Abram’s example challenges us:

• Do we trust God as the ultimate authority over our lives?

• Are we tempted to rely on earthly things—like possessions, recognition, or  even people—more than we rely on Him?

El Elyon reminds us that we don’t have to chase after the world’s riches or approval because God is our provider and sustainer. When we trust Him, we can face any challenge with confidence, knowing He holds us and our circumstances in His hands.

Take this truth with you: You serve El Elyon, the God Most High, who has all power, all authority, and all love for you. Trust Him today!

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself as El Elyon—God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth. Help us to trust in Your supreme control over our lives. Give us faith to rely on You, not on the fleeting things of this world. May we live boldly, knowing You have everything under control. Amen.
